What’s Inside Counts

Confidently revealing what lies within, most of these handbags put your life on display to the rest of the world - and you don’t mind. You are happy to show what you treasure and how you keep your things proving that it is what’s in the inside that counts as much as the outside.

This style is all about showing off your sense of handbag style, but also all the little trinkets and accessories that you’ve added inside.Found in all colors and in all styles, the not so new concept of clear handbags has been given a new meaning.

Plastic & Fashion

Plastic has played an important part in fashion since 1930. Accidentally discovered by a German chemist, PVC came into the market in 1926. Else Schiaparelli, known for her altered version of what is in style, was the first designer to use the synthetic material in her clothing line. She started to add out-of-the-box plastic zippers and see-through raincoats.

Paco Rabanne was famous for his contemporary show in 1966 which focused on dresses made out of unwearable materials. As a student of Schiaparelli, it included plastic. Plastic continued to get integrated into fashion throughout the sixties and seventies.

A Memorable Bag

And so it continued to the 90s when Hermes, after gaining its place as a brand to look out for, went completely away from their natural, fine leather materials and gave see-through handbags as a gift with an invitation to its 1996 show.

This bag had a special source of inspiration. After the 1995 terrorist attack, the fashion house released the bags as a way to provide more transparent security checks at the airport.

A Rainproof Classic

In Spring/summer of 2018 last year, fashion houses head’s turned as Chanel came out with the classic flap handbag in a PVC version. This design continued on to 2019 where lots of small bags revealed the few contents inside.

With rainwear inspired fashion designs all over the runway of spring 2018, it’s no surprise PVC handbag is having another big moment. For many buyers, wearing clothes made of plastic seems like an outrageous concept - even with high fashion labels on them, but for some - it is a must-have.

2019 Handbag Styles

The easiest way to stay on trend without being uncomfortable is to carry a clear PVC handbag that suits your needs. Refinery29 takes us through the different styles that were showcased down the runways earlier this year.

The Bag Within a Bag

Yes, brands have been playing on the rainproof idea and have now made PVC plastic handbags big enough to fit a matching, luxurious handbag inside. This will definitely ensure that your bag stays as pristine as it was when you bought it.

The Shopper Tote

This is your standard, easy going, easy fill handbag, but see-through. Perhaps you even have some lying around the house ready to use for a day at the beach or for storing those things you just don’t know where else to put in your home. Now it's time to start taking them out with you as your go-to accessory.

If you want to add a little extra character, you can get a style with a brand name largely printed across or a simple tinted color PVC fabric.

The Belt Bag

The belt bag has made a comeback this year and you can find it in all different styles. Leather, animal skin and PVC. It is hitting the streets everywhere and these wearers also don’t mind who can see what. Better to play safe though and wear your bag at the front!

Refined Look

This year’s plastic trend has a refined look and it can be tough to pull it off. Have a look at the images of the different fashion weeks across the globe and check out what the models wear to go with the PVC handbag. It’s also an unexpected fabric to use seeing as the world is saying “No” to plastic, but perhaps these brands can do like Addidas and use recycled plastic.
