Updated for 2020!
The 2019 fashion runways have long been packed up in London, Paris, New York, and Milan, and it's time to take a closer look at the latest trends to choose the perfect color for your next handbag moving into the 2020 season.
Louis Vuitton stood out with a tote bag in its iconic brown print, but with a twist. On the front, there is a decal that looks like a stack of VHS tapes. A closer look shows that the stack of tapes has a name like "The Backpack is Back" and "Louis' Big Adventure."
Continuing on the retro video theme was a purse made to look like a video with unraveling tape as the handle. Other standouts included feathers, especially on white bags, lending an ethereal grace to the look.
We also saw a few with metal studs, evoking 80s punk street style. Woven textiles and sacks in the shape of buckets with on-the-nose nods to those hardware store purchases were also big.
If you have long dreamt of a bag that looks like a pail, the runways had you covered. The color was influential, with certain colors were more popular than others.
Other than always-fashionable tan, many designers were showing off white and cream handbags - a perfect look for warm temperatures. Lipstick red with cool undertones was another dominating color.
In this article we'll guide you through these fashion trends so you can rock the new year with a chic and trendy look!
Fresh whites were big - literally, they were big bags.
Alexander McQueen had a large cream-colored bucket bag with a leather strip down the middle that calls to mind riding crops and jackets.
Valentino's white tote was even larger - and covered in feathers.
Hermes' may have been the largest though - bringing to mind a pillowcase, but with a strap. Chanel got in the game with a crescent-shaped quilted white clutch, accented with a ruffle.
Miu Miu also had a medium-sized white handbag with a braided handle.
Maison Margiela's military-inspired harness pack and Loewe, Off-White's fanny pack.
Marni's white tote looked like a bespoke bucket (stay tuned for more of this below), with a delicate gold-toned metal handle. Max Mara offered a pleated white purse.
Simone Rocha's take on the white trend was an iridescent, fat tear-drop shaped, hard-shelled confection that evoked an imperfect pearl.
Staud's white croc half-circle purse also featured feathers.
Khaite had a bulbous medium-sized cream purse with a long, thin strap.
Prada's white purse was bucket-shaped and woven, with an intricately braided strap.

Valentino brought back the 80s with a neon yellow messenger studded with metal spikes.
Lanvin had a rectangular, angular carryall of the lightest blue (if it were any lighter, it would be in the white section of this post) with a metal cat for a carrying handle.
Bottega Veneta's clutch was a large triangle in palest powder blue, folded over for easy carrying.
Tory Burch walked a clear tote with red binding, encasing a second tote inside it in a medium blue.
Nina Ricci's royal blue bucket looked exactly like something you'd find in a hardware store bucket but in a snappier color.
If you are a fan of the blue, check out this beautiful vegan leather tote that comes in a variety of shades.
Balenciaga presented a glossy red crocodile purse.
Maison Margiela had a huge clutch in a glossy red patent. Continuing on the holey theme, Off-White had a red purse whose holes made it look like a dyed block of Swiss cheese.
Khaite's large red purse was structured and minimalist, and worn on the hip like a messenger, but with a long, delicate strap.
Sies Marjan's huge red bag was also croc, with a large gold-tone metal ring accent that sits against the upper chest when worn across the body.
Ulla Johnson's contribution was red and woven with square cut-outs and a brown leather strap hit both the red and the holey trends.
Chanel's lipstick-hued baguette was emblazoned with the brand's name in the chain on the front, and a leather and chain strap.

One of the most classic accessory color choices, tans were in abundance on the runways for the spring and summer 2020 runway shows.
These shades work for spring and summer as well as winter and autumn (shearling, anyone?), and are usually a perfect match for any outfit.
Staud had a deep orangey tan cinched-top purse in a longer silhouette than we usually see for this style.
Jonathan Simkhai's take was an envelope clutch with a chunky braided wrist strap in a tan that is so light, it could almost be called beige. Simkai also had one shade lighter in a huge tote with a cut-on strap.
Michael Kors showed a blatantly army-inspired messenger with large metal stars and multiple outer pockets, in a rich medium tan.
JW Anderson's tan bag had a wide braided fabric strap with long tasseled ends that could almost double as a scarf.
Ferragamo's medium tan, almost nude, ostrich offering was exquisitely understated despite its large size.
Max Mara was all business in a milk chocolate triangular-prism-shaped tote with pleats.
Christian Dior's utilitarian tan fabric mini-tote was somehow evocative of a retro military canteen.
Balmain had an equestrian-feeling small rich tan envelope clutch with an outsized yellow rope strap.
Loewe's two-tone beige and the tan cinch-top purse was horseshoe-shaped.
Chloe's nude purse had a streamlined shape and intricate buckle detailing around the edges.

This vibrant color makes a statement in any shade and is particularly suited to spring handbags.
Ferragamo's orange satchel featured a basketweave body and a leather lid that closes with a twist closure.
Bottega Veneta used large strands to create a red-orange basketweave purse with a shoulder strap.
Dolce and Gabbana's orange duo was a tiny chain-handled mini-satchel, worn with an even smaller version that sat atop a wrist strap like a watch face.
Marc Jacobs' contribution to this category was a furry round purse with a chain handle in a tangerine shade.
Oscar de la Renta had an elegant envelope-fold tote in a slightly burnt orange shade. In addition to some obvious color groupings, we saw some patterns and weaves that gained traction on their way down the runway.
Plaid is classic for good reason. Though we often associate the sorts of plaids seen in the latest shows as belonging to autumn, these designers showed us that plaid can be season-less.
Chanel had a structured red, white and black plaid boucle shoulder strapped purse.
Fendi showed us a plaid duo including a medium-sized tote paired with a sunglass-sized shoulder bag in charcoal and tan tones.
If you're looking for an accessory with a vegan-friendly pattern, you might want to check out this adorable plaid crossbody bag.
Lots of offerings with cut-outs, or woven like baskets or macrame with holes in them, on the runway for 2020.
From Stella McCartney's circular straw carryall to Hermes' leather cut out tote, these are less functional bags that you'll need to be careful whilst filling, lest your possessions literally fall through the cracks.
Celine's take on the trend was a literal basket suspended in a studded leather harness.
Prabal Garang got in on this trend, perfect for spring-summer 2020, with a lime green macrame tote with medallion motifs and tassels.
If you want to try out this look, but don't want to risk your possessions spilling out of the bottom of a hole-riddled tote, this cute vegan leather crossbody from our shop hits the right notes while keeping your stuff secure.
You're may not grab a couture purse anytime soon. But if you don't have the money for a Chanel or Mansur Gavriel, mosey around the Leafy Souls store.
