Have you just received your brand new handbag from the store folded up in a package? Or perhaps you found a bag crumpled up and left in a corner of your wardrobe that you never access. In both cases, you notice that there are wrinkles and that leather is not the easiest material from which to remove them.
You have questions and we have answers.
In order to remove wrinkles, the material needs to be stretched or shrunk. The impact you have can be minimal, leaving your item as good as new and wrinkle-free. But if you are not cautious when treating your leather handbag, you may alter the chemical structure of the material more visibly.
You probably have access to most items needed in this guide.
Because of the shape and style of handbags, it may be impossible to get every wrinkle out and perhaps you don’t need to. For the ones that do need some more attention, have a read through our tips below.
If you have access to a shower, try this first. This will take some time. Hang your bag in the bathroom close to the shower. Not too close - you do not want it to get wet as this will cause the fabric to stain.
You need to keep it at a certain distance where hot water won't access it, but the steam can make your leather a bit more flexible than before you started the process. Allow the vapor to accumulate for about 15 minutes.
Then pull the item downward with gentle pressure until the wrinkles are gone. If you're wondering how to get wrinkles out of a leather jacket or how to get wrinkles out of leather shoes, try this method.
After you've steamed the item gently, grab some old newspapers or any paper you have access to that can fit into your bag that will help it relax into its natural shape. The paper will absorb the moisture.
If you are in a rush and you have access to a dryer, toss your purse in on the lowest setting for one minute to release wrinkles.
If you're wondering how to remove wrinkles from leather, and you have access to an iron with a low setting, try this method:
Place cotton fabric on top of the bag to protect the fabric. Make sure there is no water in the iron. Iron on top of the cotton on the lowest setting. Movements should be quick: do not keep the iron in one spot for more than one second.
Another method is to stretch the leather with alcohol, which you should have easy access to. Just wet any cloth you can access with alcohol and wipe it on the material, then stretch it.
You can weigh down the corners of the bag with anything heavy you can access, to keep it stretched as it dries.
Another idea is to sample the alcohol on a very small area of your handbag that you think you can risk. If you see that the crease gets removed after passing the cloth and wiping on it a bit with your finger, then you are good to go!
Once finished, hang your bag on a hanger and let the creases that you couldn’t get rid of release on their own. Make sure to place the handbag in a well-ventilated area of your home and that there is nothing in it other than some paper that will keep its shape in place.
Remember, not all wrinkles can be removed, but this way you can ensure that you have done everything that you can.
Don’t forget to give it a nice wipe with leather conditioner to replenish the oils - you can buy this product at a drug-store or shoe retailer.
The heat and steam methods dry out the bag for good reason, but you need to give the leather some extra love by treating it with the best quality product that will leave the fabric soft and taken care of.
Hopefully this post has fulfilled your search on wrinkle removal.
