Sustainability has been a hot topic for a good few years now and designers are increasingly looking for materials that have a lesser impact on the environment. Materials that are recycled, recyclable, or come from renewable sources are gaining in popularity and really starting to make their mark in design and architecture.
Nowadays, the world is living an ecological paradigm. Schools and universities are teaching designers not only to create beautiful and functional objects but also ethical and eco-friendly ones. So when designers learn about these concerns for the environment, they tend to select eco-friendly materials over standard ones, which is great because we are going towards a green path, and the designer as an object creator has a special kind of influence in the world and in the community.
So when designers find cork, they find a perfect material for their creations, one that responds to all of their concerns because it is aesthetically beautiful, functional and eco-friendly.
Cork fabric is an eco-friendly material, perfect for sewing and DIY handcrafts. This fabric is ideal for crafts, shoes, upholstery, bags, purses, etc. You can sew it or glue to other materials and surfaces, as well as laser cut. Unlike leather, cork fabric is 100% natural and vegan, water repellent, stain-resistant and scratch-proof. Another advantage of cork fabric over leather is that it’s very low-maintenance. To keep your vegan cork accessories in good shape, all you need to do is clean them with water and soap.
The cork textile joins the unique characteristics of the cork material with a very rigorous manufacturing process that allows achieving great levels of mechanical, sensorial and microbiological properties.
After being harvested, the cork is left to air dry for six months. Then it’s boiled and steamed to get even more elasticity. Heat and pressure are applied to cork to press it into blocks, which are later sliced in thin sheets that can be transformed into a multitude of wonderful cork leather accessories. Unlike the heavy chemical processing of leather, cork leather production is chemical-free.
Despite your nightmarish visions, cork fabric won’t crack or crumble. In fact, due to its very simple and natural processing, cork fabric retains all the qualities that “raw” cork is known for:

Water-resistance is cork’s best-kept secret: cork ages without deteriorating mainly due to its resistance to moisture. The suberin covering (a waterproofing waxy substance) present in the cell walls make cork virtually impermeable to liquids and gases.
Cork wallets are very sturdy and will last you a lifetime, even if you carry them daily in your jeans’ pocket; other cork accessories are just as resistant. Thanks to its honeycomb structure, cork is highly abrasion resistant and has a high friction coefficient. That’s why cork is a go-to material even for NASA.
We surely hope you won’t ever need to test this, but hey… you never know! The slow combustion of cork makes it a natural fire retardant and a kind of barrier against fire.
