AMSTERDAM: VEGAN FOOD BRANDS

Amsterdam has a few grocery stores that come to mind when one considers shopping in this innovative city. Although veganism is still growing in this country, there are a few brands of food that are vegan and available to the public.

Albert Hiejn is the most popular food store in general with shops like Ekoplaza and Ekodis following. There are also a few restaurants that sell vegan brands in their store, but for this article, we will concentrate on groceries.

Vegan Trek Bars

TREK Protein Energy Bars pack 10g of protein and are made with all-natural ingredients (fruit, oats and protein crunchies), each carefully considered to give you lasting energy. With no added sugar or syrups these cold-pressed wholefood bars are 1 of your 5 a day and gluten, wheat & dairy-free - and they're vegan too!

TREK Protein Flapjacks are a British classic, revolutionized! Packing 9-10g of protein, our delicious flapjacks provide a 2:1 carb-to-protein ratio, perfect for exercise recovery. Gluten-free and proudly vegan, TREK Protein Flapjacks give you reliable long-lasting energy, when you need it most.

Ideal for sports and fitness fans and great for those looking for a nourishing and filling snack. TREK bars have you covered.  Nature is Power.

Albert Heijn Chickpea Ravioli

This pasta is really handy if you are looking for a quick lunch. It only takes a few minutes to boil the water, cook the pasta and mix it all with your favorite vegan-friendly pesto or butter and sage sauce.

This mezzelune is fresh and organic. The pasta is filled with chickpeas, lentils and rosemary. Serve with your favorite sauce in just 4 minutes. It is 250 grams of fresh pasta made in Italy from durum wheat semolina and buckwheat flour filled with legumes.

Nakd Bars

For the past 14 years, Nakd bars have been committed to creating yummy, healthy snacks, and to make the world a happier place along the way. That’s why they don’t just whip up delicious, good-for-you munchies; they do their best to help others and try to spread a little joy as they go, too.

They also believe wholeheartedly in the power of whole foods! That means all our tasty treats are made from 100% natural ingredients, 100% of the time. If that sounds like your cup of tea, stick the kettle on, grab a snack and stick around!

Meat Substitutes

All supermarkets will sell tofu. Some of them also sell tempeh, an Indonesian product also made from soybeans. All supermarkets will have additional meat substitutes nowadays, depending on the store half of them usually are not vegan but vegetarian (often containing chicken egg protein). Dairy Substitutes

In recent years, soy milk and other non-dairy milk have become much more popular. Nowadays you will find soy milk in every supermarket, usually also almond milk, rice milk, oat milk etc. from various brands. In the fridge section, you will find soy yoghurt and sometimes quark. Vegan cheese is not very common yet in normal supermarkets but can be found. Jumbo has Wilmersburger, Albert Heijn has Violife products.

Veganism is not just about food. Vegans think about how they consume products in general including clothing, home goods and accessories. Vegans want to know how everything is made and produced so that they can buy in the most ethical way they can. But it is not always easy to find out the processes or to ensure that companies are being honest and transparent.
